Born in the coastal mountains of Blodgett, Oregon and raised in San Marcos, California, Don Carter grew up with a strong musical influence, remembering Stevie Wonder and Elvis Costello as the soundtrack to his formative years. Not only would his mother sing to him, but she would seek out the hippest and most soulful music to bring home, especially in the lyrical vein, influencing his style and taste in music for the rest of his life. Cake, The Specials, The Police, Queen, Sublime, Bargain Music, and Toots and the Maytals are on Don's list for favorite bands, while Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder and Wyclef Jean make up favorite musicians. Rico (The Specials, Rico and The Rudies) and Curtis Fuller are his picks for best trombonist.
After trying out the Trumpet and finally deciding on the Trombone in Middle School, Don realized that this was the instrument for him. Not only was it fun and easy to play, but it was something he excelled at, where others found the instrument difficult or unpopular. He joined multiple bands at once, playing non-stop on his way to mastering the instrument. He joined The Fabulous Rudies ("The Rudies") while a senior in High School, excited about his input and the rewards. Don started writing horn parts and melody lines, soon growing into a songwriter for the group, while he also designed flyers for live performances. He quickly became a vital member of the band, not only because of his creative input, but also because of his thoughtful insight into matters of management and musical ideology.
Don joined King Biscuit Revue and has made major contributions in all of the abovementioned areas. His trombone playing is high energy and soulful. Additionally, fans are mesmerized by the fact that he does a frenzied dance WHILE playing! - so much fun to watch!
Don brings a myriad of talents to King Biscuit Revue and the Fabulous Rudies - expert musicianship, songwriting, graphic design and electronics selection and engineering. Such a broad range of talents packaged in an all around great guy makes us super lucky to have him!
